Buy Handmade vol 49

This week we are headed to Spain

Name: Laura Caldentey
Age: 22
Occupation: freelance illustrator and Etsy shop owner

Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! I'm Laura, I'm a self-taught illustrator and a natural born crafter. I studied media at the university and someday I want to run my own shop.

When did you start creating and how long have you been on Etsy?
Well, I've never stopped creating since I was a child, I always been a little crafter, but I started to be more "seriously" in 2011, when I opened my Etsy shop.

How did you come up with your business name, is there any special meaning behind it?
Yes! When I met my boyfriend he started to call me Lauryn (because he likes Lauryn Hill a lot) and green is my favorite color. I think that Lauryn Green it's more catchy and fun than remember my full name.

Has your Etsy shop become your full time job? If not, would you like it to be?
Now I'm searching for a job, but I don't find anything here in Spain (how strange!). My the Etsy shop is growing little by little and it's the only resource I have, but it will go well!

How would you describe your creative process?
For creating I need two things: My workspace very clean and time for hanging out with other people. I mean, when I try to create something and I stay lots of days in my house, simply I can't. Breaks are very important to me, they bring me my creativity and inspire me. It's like a wheel.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
From books, movies, people, animals... For me, the best ideas come when I am about to fall asleep, when I'm relaxed and out of the world.

What is your most cherished handmade item?
The first scarf I made that I gave to my boyfriend in Christmas.

Apart from creating things, what do you like to do?
I love cycling with my dog and take long walks.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be and why?
Difficult question! I think I would be someone that works with animals, because I love them and they need our help.

Five years from now you will be… living in a big city, running my own shop and travelling constantly!

Describe yourself in five words: simple, cheerful, persevering, daydreamer and creative.

Carrying on with the five theme, if I were to turn on your <computer>, what five artists/songs would I see on your recently played list?
Sondre Lerche, The Kooks, The Beatles, Alexandre Desplat, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

Lastly, do you have any advice for anyone thinking about opening their own shop or participating in craft shows?
Be constant, look what others do, but do not compare your success with the others
